Butoh-MA workshop with Tadashi Endo

TADASHI ENDO

Elève of the great Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno, found his own style of dancing which he calls "Butoh - MA". MA is a very important word in Zen Buddhism that has two meanings: "emptiness" and "the space between things".

When Tadashi Endo is teaching it is not just about a hard warm-up, improvisations and choreographic work, it is also about getting a deep insight into Butoh philosophy. He will tell us a lot about what Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata were thinking and about his life as a "Butohist". He always tries to get his students to find their own Butoh. As Kazuo Ohno says, "everyone can dance Butoh," perhaps not the Japanese Butoh, but everyone can find their own movements butoh-wise.

In order to succeed in your research, you need emptiness so that new ideas and new imaginations along with new patterns of movement can grow in both your body and mind.

.

Butoh-MA is the way to make the invisible visible. The least movement allows the expression of feelings and images to reach a peak intensity. It is more important to keep the balance between energy, tension and control than to care about movement aesthetics.

.

"The dancer should not dance, she/he should be danced".

.

What is Gustavo Collini Sartor's Butoh?

"Butoh is actually an ideogram, an image that can have several interpretations".

"Kazuo Ohno, my teacher - creator of the dance along with Tatsumi Hijikata- called it the dance of darkness. But, as Ohno made clear, it was not about darkness, but about the dreamlike appearance, what is under a veil and what needs to be disclosed with the body, not with words.

.

SARTOR GUSTAVO COLLINI:

Actor, Butoh dancer, independent film and theatre director. He developed his art in three continents: The Americas, Asia and Europe.

He graduated from the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art as an actor and director. He is also a set designer from Universidad del Salvador.

.

He completed his training with Ellen Stewart at La Mama Theater in New York, with Pina Bausch (author of the phrase: "I don't care how human beings dance, but what moves them") and with Jerzy Grotowski, creator of the poor theater, among others. He began his Butoh studies in Venice, with Kazuo Ohno and his son, Yoshito Ohno. For ten years he followed his teacher around Europe, and finally ended up at the Kazuo Ohno Dance Institute in Tokyo.

.

Then he returned to Buenos Aires, where he has taught Butoh for 25 years at his own school based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
